Issa HAUL!! (*cue applause)
In all actuality, when I walked into the drugstore, I had NO intention of purchasing a beauty related item.
However, the Cover Girl display caught my attention. I’m a sucker for beauty displays.
The display included testers and readily found one in my shade (Tawny) to squirt a dab on the back of my hand. I was instantly impress with the consistency of the foundation and the fact that the color also you match my skin tone very well.
Now we all know that the skin on the back of our hand is quite different from the skin on our face, especially when our face goes through so many changes from one season to another. I initially thought that it would be a matte finish with a tinge of glow. I don’t have super dry skin. My skin is pretty normal/sensitive. But I definitely need moisture. The foundation in Walgreens retails at 12.99, which is a very reasonable drugstore price. I did not see a complimentary powder and was a bit disappointed by it.
On my day off, I used the time to test out the Covergirl Vitalist Elixir Foundation.
So, here’s my rule of thumb when it comes to testing out foundations to determine if it is the right match for me.
COLOR// I will be honest and say that finding my ideal foundation has been a struggle for most of my adult life. I have a neutral brown skin tone so foundations tend to show up too red (oompa loompa orange), gray (the undead), or ultra yellow. I have a drawer full of low and high end foundations that may have been nice in terms of consistency, price, etc., but the shade was off. I DON’T believe in mixing shades. To be honest, we shouldn’t have to (sips tea). I strongly urge brands to hear the pleas of women of color and ALWAYS include them in their product line.
CONSISTENCY // I personally hold foundation consistency to be just as valuable as the color. I like a smooth, moderately thick consistency for liquid foundations. I’m not a fan of runny liquid foundations or heavy full coverage ones either. Foundations should not absorb into your skin or settle into fine lines. No, nope, nuh uh. So, the finishing finish of a foundation is what I look for that definitely covers discoloration or tough spots.
LONGEVITY// The lasting power is the third criteria for my ideal foundation. I love a foundation that looks just as good 8-10 hours later than when I applied it. Now, that may be a bit far-fetched, but I would prefer to look polished by the end of the day.
Now here’s my first impression of the Cover Girl Elixir Foundation after wearing it every day for one week. I tried it with a powder and without one. The foundation didn’t have an overpowering smell, for which I was thankful. The scent wasn’t annoying but there is a scent. The packaging looks super cute, but after just a few days the top wouldn’t stay on. This is definitely not a positive trait, especially if you need to take your makeup on-the-go.
My impression: I loved the color and the consistency of the foundation, but the longevity fell flat for me. By mid-day, my face was quite shiny and therefore the foundation had a tendency to transfer to surfaces or clothes. Not a good look. Now I will say, there was a definite beautiful glow at the start and I believe if you can find a powder to compliment the foundation, it may give you different results. For the price point, it’s worth a try.
